Umpires

The Newcastle City & Suburban Cricket Umpires Association provide match officials to the Newcastle City & Suburban Cricket Association & the Newcastle Junior Cricket Association officiating in almost 700 matches for the 2023/24 season. Our umpires also officiate for Newcastle Premier League, the Ron Arendts (U11) and Graeme Malcolm (U14) January Carnivals as well as PSSA, CHS and HRIS school competitions.

History
The Newcastle City & Suburban Cricket Umpires Association, a cornerstone of the local cricket community, was founded on August 2, 1924. Initially, the association gathered at a venue on Scott Street, where they laid down the foundational rules and began their mission to uphold the integrity of cricket in Newcastle.

After several years, the association moved its base of operations to the Wal Young House in Newcastle, where it remained for over 70 years. This period marked a significant era of growth and stabilization. In 1996 the association peaked at 94 registered umpires.

Over the years our umpires have officiated at many Country NSW, HVRCC, DCA, IDCA, Margaret Peden and Molly Dive competitions.

Today, the association continues to thrive and uphold its long-standing traditions, with all meetings, including the Annual General Meeting, now held at the Mex Club. This venue shift supports the ongoing commitment of the association to facilitate accessible and engaging environments for umpires to collaborate and enhance their skills.

The Laws of Cricket
The Laws of Cricket are a set of rules that govern how the game of cricket is played globally.

The first known set of these rules dates back to 1744 Since 1788, the rules have been managed by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) at Lord's Cricket Ground in London.
There are 42 Laws in total, covering every part of the game.

The MCC has updated these Laws six times, with some changes in between, resulting in multiple editions. The latest version, the seventh, was introduced in October 2017 and its third edition took effect on October 1, 2022.
